Habitat Suitability Models and the Shortfall in Conservation Planning for African Vertebrates

Article Abstract:

Habitat suitability levels are compared to presence-absence field data for 1223 African amphibians and mammals for systematic reserve selection processes. Findings show that the current reserve system would require a 30% to 100% expansion in order to achieve minimal targets for conservation. Policy implications are discussed.

Conservation Prioritization Based on Distribution of Land Snails in Hungary

Article Abstract:

Data and analysis are presented for 121 land snail species in Hungary, including local frequency, global size range, and correction factors for species importance or biased frequency estimates. Although environmental protections were found to be adequate, hotspots are identified and recommended for protected status.

Effects of Buffer-Strip Retention and Clearcutting on Land Snails in Boreal Riparian Forests

Article Abstract:

Persistence of land snails in logged regions are compared for populations in which clearcutting was done across the stream channel and for populations in which a 10-meter wide buffer strip was left on each side of the stream. Findings show that buffer strips are helpful in protecting land snails.
