Health minister ignites row over drugs for HIV mothers

Article Abstract:

It was reported that nevirapine, a drug administered to the mother during labor, encouraged the growth of drug resistant virus in the mother's body. However, it was later announced that women with such drug-resistant viruses responded less to the antiretroviral nevirapine when used to treat disease later in life. Thus, the South Africa health minister created a storm when she announced the discontinuance of the drug based on the report.

Drug suicide risks prompt call for FDA action

Article Abstract:

A scientific advisory panel has joined a chorus of patient groups and consumer advocates in calling for the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to curb the use of certain antidepressant medications in young people. The panel said that the FDA should go ahead with its reanalysis of the data- but should also do more to caution physicians about the risks posed by the drugs.
