Honeybee swarms: How do scouts guide a swarm of uninformed bees?

Article Abstract:

A model was developed that stimulates the movement of swarms and scouts and showed that when scouts fly through swarm at a speed slightly higher than the speed of the other uninformed bees, they are indeed able to direct the swarm toward its new home. The results showed that a small number of informed scouts guided the uninformed bees successfully towards the new home.

Olfactory information processing in honeybee, Apis mellifera, nestmate recognition

Article Abstract:

Nestmate recognition is used as a model system for testing how animals discriminate complex odour mixtures. It is concluded that if any one of five compounds in a template applied to a guard bee is absent on another bee, then the guard is unlikely to identify that bee as a colony member.
