How cells know their place

Article Abstract:

Morphogenetic molecules' provision of positional information during cell differentiation has been proved in Drosophila but scientists have been unable to find similar evidence for mammals. However, J.R. Sanes and N. Rosenthal, in separate experiments, may have provided that evidence through transgene and endogenous fusion genes' expressions in mice. Their experiments may indicate that transgenes respond to morphogens that are not recognized by endogenous genes. Further experimentation is necessary to confirm morphogenesis in mammals.

Interpretation of the sonic hedgehog morphogen gradient by a temporal adaptation mechanism

Article Abstract:

A novel strategy of temporal adaptation of cells that could be used for interpretation of morphogen sonic hedgehog (SHH) is described. It suggests that changing the concentration or duration of SHH has an equivalent effect on intracellular signalling to control differential gene expression.
