How to be physiological

Article Abstract:

A new in vivo method of studying metabolism and transport in the small intestine uses unanaesthetized, unrestrained and unstressed mice. Using a dual infusion system, the concentration of the solutes being absorbed in the aorta is converted into the absorption rate. These in vivo studies show that traditional in vitro studies sometimes give erroneous results such as the passive component in the absorption of D-glucose because the anaesthesia and surgery used in vitro studies decreased the active component but did not affect the passive component.
