Husbands a drag to high-flying physicists

Article Abstract:

Almost 45% of married female physicists in the US have physicist spouses, according to a new study undertaken for the American Physical Society's Committee on the Status of Women in Physics. Often one partner will have to take a lower-level science job, or a non-science job, due to the shortage of jobs in the field and the problem in finding two appointments at the same location. Some institutes provide split or shared positions or offer spouse-hiring programmes.

British universities face review to increase accountability

Article Abstract:

Reviews of research spending in British universities will begin in 1999 with a series of pilot institutions, extending to top research universities by the end of the following year. The transparency review is a condition linked to increases in research spending allocated to universities, and it aims to make universities more accountable for spending. The review will also assess whether current funding is sufficiently selective.
