In praise of interdisciplinarity

Article Abstract:

There is a serious concern that about research trends leading to overspecialization in science, ignoring the importance of interdisciplinary approach. The trend is mainly because, by concentrating on a single field of research, it is easy to seek funds and university positions. The Keystone Center, a non-profit organization, has in its recent annual meeting held an interdisciplinary meeting known as the Scientist to Scientist colloquia which encouraged scientists from various fields to interact and exchange their views.

Relocation of geological survey 'could free funds for scientists'

Article Abstract:

The US Geological Survey (USGS) has been instructed to relocate its western headquarters in Menlo Park, California to the San Francisco Bay area. It is currently paying $14 million of its $80 million budget in rent at Menlo Park, and $50 million is spent on salaires. However there is concern that the move would affect the intellectual health of the USGS because of the practicalities of moving scientists and their families.
