In vivo enhancer analysis of human conserved non-coding sequences

Article Abstract:

The extreme evolutionary sequence conservation is used as a filter to identify putative gene regulatory elements and the in vivo enhancer activity of a large group of non-coding elements in the human genome that are conserved in human-rat-mouse is characterized. The results have illustrated the utility of the training sets for a variety of biological applications, including decoding the regulatory vocabulary of the human genome.

A RNA gene expressed during cortical development evolved rapidly in humans

Article Abstract:

A ranking of regions in the human that show significant evolutionary acceleration is devised. A report that the most dramatic of these 'human accelerated region', HAR1, is part of a novel RNA gene (HAR1F) that is expressed specifically in Cajal-Retzius neurons in the developing human neocortex from 7 to 19 gestational weeks, a crucial period for cortical neuron specification and migration is presented.

A distal enhancer and an ultraconserved exon are derived from a novel retroposon

Article Abstract:

A study to show that distal enhancer and an ultraconserved exon are derived from a novel retroposon is presented. Relics of transposable elements have acquired a function that serves their host, a process termed 'exaptation', and provide an origin for at least some of the many highly conserved vertebrate-specific genomic sequences.
