Incorporating uncertainty into management models for marine mammals

Article Abstract:

The history of marine mammal management demonstrates the need to incorporate uncertainty into management models. The new management scheme separates science from policy through the use of performance criteria. The management efforts are directed towards the risk posed by human beings to marine species.

Status of marine mammals in the United States

Article Abstract:

The regional differences in the status of the marine mammal stocks are noted in the U.S. Abundant quantitative data is available for few cetacean stocks but it is difficult to monitor the trend of these species.

Bycatch of Marine Mammals in U.S. and Global Fisheries

Marine mammal bycatch in the United States was reduced significantly after take reduction policies were implemented; however, bycatch continues to be a threat to marine mammal populations worldwide.
