Inflammation and metabolic disorders

Article Abstract:

A discussion on obesity and type 2 diabetes is presented to illustrate the links between nutrient- and pathogen-sensing pathways and the interfacing of metabolic and inflammatory responses through these links as the mechanistic core of chronic and common metabolic diseases. It is inferred that obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes are found to be closely associated with chronic inflammation characterized by abnormal cytokine production, increased acute-phase reactants and other mediators and activation of a network of inflammatory signaling pathways.

A linguistic model for the rational design of antimicrobial peptides

Article Abstract:

The rational design of new antimicrobial peptides (AmPs) that show limited homology to naturally occurring proteins but have strong bacteriostatic activity against several species of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus anthracis, is reported. A set of regular grammars is used to create unnatural AmP sequences, which conform to the formal syntax of natural antimicrobial peptides but populate a previously unexplored region of protein sequence space.
