Information propagation

Article Abstract:

The numerical simulations show that for short distances, forces in granular systems propagate much like waves, but that at longer distances an applied force causes an elastic-like deformation. A numerical model of two-dimensional slabs composed of disc-shaped grains subjected to a local, downward, vertical force was investigated.

Friction enhances elasticity in granular solids

Article Abstract:

The numerical simulations of the response of a two-dimensional granular slab to an external load are described revealing that both approaches are valid-albeit on different length scales. Static friction plays a key role in increasing the elastic range and renders the response more isotropic.

Electronic tagging and population structure of Atlantic bluefin tuna

Article Abstract:

The electronic tagging of 772 Atlantic bluefin tuna in the western Atlantic Ocean is reported in an effort to identify population structure. Trans-Atlantic movements of western-tagged bluefin tuna reveal site fidelity to known spawning areas in the Mediterranean Sea.
