Japanese spin-offs face struggle for survival

Article Abstract:

Companies setup by academics are examined as observers are sceptical about whether many of these companies would prove to be viable and even government officials concede that a lot of them are struggling to survive. It is found that Japanese public sector doesn't have strong incentives to buy things from small companies and with the number of university spin-offs increasing, the business environment has become severe.

Institute doomed by the loss of interest in basics

Article Abstract:

The Biomolecular Engineering Research Institute (BERI) in Osaka whose mission is to develop basic science that interpin drug development is about to close. The closing of BERI is because the gap between scientific discovery and industrial applications is too large for the sponsors to justify the cost.

Curiosity makes way for capitalism
