Job losses loom in NASA restructuring plan

Article Abstract:

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) head Daniel Goldin announced a restructuring plan that is expected to deprive an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 employees of their jobs. The restructuring will bring NASA personnel under the control of government-funded science institutes that are run by universities, consortia or private firms. The move is unlikely to result in cost savings, but will increase the use of peer review and promote better cooperation among scientists of the academic and scientific communities.

NASA debates 'privatizing' its space centres

Article Abstract:

The reduce in budget to NASA has forced the officials to handover some of their space centers to private organizations. Privatization will involve the consent from the universities which are associated with the operation of these space centers. The first three centers to be privatized will be the Ames Research Center, Jet Propulsion Laboratory JPL and Goddrad Space Flight Center.

'Faster, cheaper, better' under fire at NASA

Article Abstract:

The scientists who took part in a workshop organised by NASA for a review of the new Discovery line of low-budget planetary missions have criticized the program as being more concerned with budget than with quality. The scientists were also dissatisfied because they were unclear about the criteria of selection and the high cost of preparing a proposal for the project.
