Astronomers bargain for use of 'sacred' site

Article Abstract:

Opposition from Hawaiian groups is delaying the building of NASA's $50 mil Kech Interferometer telescope array on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. There are already many observatories on the site, but many Hawaiians say that the telescopes desecrate the ancient volcano, which they say is a sacred site.

Lack of funds for technology 'could undermine' Mars mission science

Article Abstract:

NASA's plans to launch space missions to Mars every two years during the first decade of the 21st century at a cost of $1 billion is hampered by a paucity of funds. The objective of collecting a sample of Mars, and discovering existing or fossil life requires additional investment in key technologies, scientific instruments and vehicles. Fund contributions are being made by NASA's human exploration office and Lockheed Martin Corporation. A joint mission with the Russians in 2001 is on the anvil. A tight budget entails risks in the missions.

Science struggles to gain respect on the space station

Article Abstract:

The international space station is a project that has attracted interest for a number of reasons unrelated to science, such as national prestige and employment for workers from the aerospace industry. Participants include the European Space Agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Canada and Russia. There have been criticisms of the project, but some useful research can emerge from it. The Project is a compromise which will be less grand than the idea envisaged by Ronald Reagan in 1984.
