Lessons for the future of journals: science journals can continue to thrive because they provide major benefits

Scientists continue to depend on scholarly journals for reporting research outcomes and obtaining information, according to research based on US scholarly science journals between 1960 and 2000. Very little change has taken place in the number of articles published per scientist, the indicators of value and usefulness and the volume of reading.

Lessons from an epidemic

Issues are presented concerning the failure of senior civil servants to take on board lessons from the 1967 foot-and-mouth disease epidemic when managing the 2001 outbreak. The role of veterinary scientists and epidemiologists is discussed.

Issues are presented concerning the campaign mounted against the animal testing company Huntingdon Life Sciences by animal rights campaigners. The cruelty uncovered at the laboratory and the government's slow response are discussed.
