'No need for haste' on Japan's fast reactor

Article Abstract:

The Special Committee on Fast-Breeder Reactors, an advisory body of Japan's Atomic Energy Commission, believes that it is vital to ensure that there are many different options available for future energy supplies in Japan. It claims that there is evidence that the main difficulties associated with fast-breeder reactors may eventually be overcome. For this reason, it recommends that Japan should continue research and development work at its Monju fast-breeder reactor. However, no decision should be made at this stage on the construction of a demonstration reactor.

Loss of Japanese satellite deals blow to remote sensing efforts

Article Abstract:

The failure of Japan's ADEOS Advanced Earth Observation Satellite came as a disappointment to Japanese National Space Development Agency officials because they were hoping the satellite's remote sensor functions would lead to similar satellite projects in global environment monitoring. The satellite ceased to function properly on Jun 30. It is likely to have failed because of a tension-adjustment mechanism design fault.
