Magma mixing as a source for Pinatubo sulphur

Article Abstract:

The volcanic eruption of Mount Pinatubo in June 1991 discharged huge amounts of ash and debris into the atmosphere, including at least 17 megatonnes of sulphur dioxide (SO2). Such a large gas cloud had a significant effect on the world's climate for several years, although how it was created has been a subject of dispute. A thermodynamic study suggests that the SO2's source could be attributed to a redox interaction between the sulphate-saturated dacitic melt and similarly saturated basaltic magma, which could also have triggered the eruption itself.

Volcano sulphur in the balance

Article Abstract:

The eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 caused at least 17 megatonnes of SO2 to be released into the atmosphere and is thought to have had a significant effect on the world's climate for several years. It is unknown how such gas clouds are generated. A new thermodynamic analysis of magma suggests that a redox interaction between sulphate-saturated dacitic melt and sulphate-saturated basaltic magma could produce gaseous sulphur and may also trigger the eruption itself.

Bubbles in volcanic systems

Article Abstract:

The formation of gas bubbles in magma may help trigger volcanic eruptions. A model consisting of a single bubble that starts at the base of a sealed reservoir shows that such bubbles would force a rise in pressure in the magmatic system that would start an eruption by breaking up the surrounding rocks. However, magma overpressure probably does not produce eruptions on its own but in conjunction with other causes such as crystallization and magma recharge.
