Making of the minibody

Article Abstract:

One approach to protein engineering is to recruit known protein folds as scaffolds for the insertion of functional sites. Such anapproach was used in constructing the minibody, whose design is based on the structure of part of the variable domain of an immunoglobulin. The minibody protein is composed of three beta-strands from the variable heavy domain and the H1 and H2 hypervariable loops. These loops constitute the sites for engineering functional sites. The minibody has been successfully used to engineer a zinc-binding site within the hypervariable loops.

Making networks work

Article Abstract:

Electronic publishing and networking can continue to grow as aids to researchers provided certain problems are dealt with. Electronic publishing's benefits to scientists include quick communication and response time, large-scale capacity for information and search access. Consequently, plans to expand these services are going forward in Europe and the US. However, publishers must resolve such questions as copyright, scanning, storage and transmission of hard copy if networking is to avoid inconsistency and achieve flexibility.

Networks enhance use of computers

Article Abstract:

Massive parallel processing and widespread computer networking are two areas of research in computing that will be explored in 1993. The EC is considering a 10-year research program to invent new software for the newest parallel processing high-speed computers. The Japanese project called the Real World Computing project focuses on applications programs. Research in the US will treat problems of rapid transmission via light and standardization of software.
