Male mating tactics and lethal combat in the nonpollinating fig wasp Sycoscapter australis

Article Abstract:

Research into fatal fighting in the nonpollinating fig wasp Sycoscapter australis is presented. It was found that around 25% of males sustained serious injury, and probably death, in intraspecific clashes. The risk of injury rose with the operational sex ratio.

The role of the body size in determining the success of the landmark-defending wasps (Hemipepsis ustulata) in aerial competitions is discussed.
