Martin Schwarzschild (1912-97)

Article Abstract:

Astrophysicist Martin Schwarzschild worked with Lyman Spitzer Jr. to make Princeton University Observatory a leading centre for theoretical astrophysics. He became a key developer of the theory of stellar evolution, and gained great respect for his ability to reduce all problems to their vital elements. He was charming and modest, and was admired by both his colleagues and his students. He received all major honours available to theoretical astrophysicists.

Lyman Spitzer Jr (1914-97): astrophysicist and founder of controlled nuclear fusion research

Article Abstract:

Astrophysicist and controlled nuclear fusion research founder Lyman Spitzer Jr. is known for his pioneering works in the fields of plasma physics, star clusters and interstellar matter. Some of his achievements include the development of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, the Copernicus satellite and the Hubble Space Telescope. Spitzer also proposed a technique for controlling thermonuclear fusion for energy production purposes.
