Moon dance: scientists shed new light on - and choreograph new protections for - the ritual mating sites of reef fish

Article Abstract:

Documentation of large-scale spawning in the coral reefs off southern Belize has helped improve protections for fish species and fostered the growth of ecotourism as an alternative to commercial fishing. This conservation approach is being used as a model for similar coral reef fauna protection projects.

Protecting the heartwood

The scientists hope to safeguard the whole of the forest by saving the core of the forest. The Nature Conservancy, has connected huge expanses of spruce and fir wilderness, and its Katahdin Forest project is described.

Pairing reserves and working forest in Cumberland Plateau are described. The Nature Conservancy is trying to protect 2.1 million acres of forest as part of the northern CumberlandEs project.
