Nest survival of chickadees in managed forests: Habitat, predator, and year effects

Article Abstract:

The research on 69 natural cavity nests of the chestnut-backed chickadee (Poecile rufescens) across a range of uncut and partial cut stands in northwest British Columbia was done to study the implications of year, habitat, and predators on nest survival during 2000-2003. It was inferred that nest survival time of chickadees varied among years which is attributed to harvest treatment, habitat, characteristics, and predator activity and red squirrel was found to be the dominant nest predator.

Using nest temperature to estimate nest attendance of piping plovers

Article Abstract:

The efficacy of two techniques iButton data loggers and custom-built thermocouples to measure nest temperature of piping plovers relative to nest attendance are compared. Results concluded that iButton can be used to determine when nests were abandoned and predated and thermocouples for studying nest attendance of ground nesting birds.

Responses of songbirds to magpie reduction in an urban habitat

Article Abstract:

The consequence of the increase in European cities of black-billed magpie, which has become the main bird nest predator in many urban parks, is examined. A comparison of productivity and relative densities is made between the urban and rural habitats of 14 songbirds.
