Article Abstract:

The priority set for NASA by President George Bush to begin a new age of human exploration has led to the stalling of scientific research on the International Space Station due to cost constraints. The most disturbing aspect of the trend is the change in NASA's mission statement to 'understand and protect our home planet' to 'pioneering the future', which symbolically neglects Earth Science in favor of a vision tuned outwards and not at the living Earth.
