Notch takes a short cut

Article Abstract:

A study shows that the classical signal-transduction pathway could be ignored totally by the events started by occupation of the Notch receptor. Study of the Notch gene is of great interest to biologists as the gene plays an important role in lateral specification, a process in which a cell differentiates. Cells in the ectodermal monolayer turn into neuronal-like tissue due to null mutations in Notch. A study is conducted on rats to understand the Notch signalling pathway.

Article Abstract:

Researchers working on the imaging of individual secretory granules and vesicles in living cells have been able to take three pictures of hippocampal cultures where there were many synaptic contacts. It was possible to identify quantal staining of synaptic sites. Other research in this field has focused on exciting selected dye molecules using evanescent-wave microscopy. It was possible to make observations of single secretory granules.

Now you see it, now you don't

Article Abstract:

Cells fulfill all the criteria necessary to be considered agents within a complex system. Modern biology and medicine see the cell as the fundamental building block of living organisms, but this concept breaks down at different perspectives and scales.
