A scalable quantum computer with ions in an array of microtraps

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to develop a new scheme to undertake quantum computations with trapped ions. This model links scalability with the benefits of quantum optical systems, especially quantum control and long coherence times.

Observation of entanglement between a single trapped atom and a single photon

Article Abstract:

Quantum entanglement between an ideal quantum memory-represented by a single trapped (super 111)Cd(super +) ion-and an ideal quantum communication channel is reported. Also, the explicit demonstration of qubit entanglement between an individual stationary atom and a 'flying' optical single photon is discussed.
