Oldest known sea turtle

Article Abstract:

An extremely well-preserved skeleton of the oldest known chelonioid, from the Early Cretaceous stage, has been found in Ceara State, Brazil. This specimen, named Santanachelys gaffneyi, is the most primitive member of the protostegid family of Cretaceous sea turtles, as well as being the first known protostegid from South America. The fact that it has a primitive grade of paddle suggests that the complete formation of paddles could have been independently acquired in each of the three families of chelonioids.

Type III InsP(sub3) receptor channel stays open in the presence of increased calcium

Article Abstract:

The functional properties of type III inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptor (InsP(sub3)R) have been examined. It is distinct InsP(sub3)-binding properties and is restricted to a trigger zone from which Ca(super2+) waves originate. It forms Ca(super2+) channels with single-channel currents and it provides positive feedback on release of Ca(super2+). Its activation in cells leads to an increase in the concentration of cytosolic Ca(super2+).

Inositol lipid pathways turn turtle

Article Abstract:

Inositol lipids come from phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns), and PtdIns-4,5-Psub2 could be involved in several cellular processes such as exocytosis, an dintracellular vesicle trafficking. Rameh and colleagues have demonstrated an alternative route of synthesis for the molecule, involving phosphorylation of the hydroxyl group at position D-4.
