Effect of adult sex ratio on mule deer and elk productivity in Colorado

Article Abstract:

Research describing a post harvest decline in young:female ratios for mule deer and elk is presented. Helicopter surveys are used to investigate deer and elk population sex ratios to explain the observed variations.

Effect of density reduction on overwinter survival of free-ranging mule deer fawns

Article Abstract:

The management of mule deer populations requires an understanding of the effect of density reduction on the overwinter survival rate of fawns. A study in northwest Colorado is designed to explore fawn survival rates when linked to density reduction and to clarify the link between fawn size, survival and density. The study shows that a reduced deer density in the treatment area increased the survival rate of overwintering fawns, whose body mass rose by an average of 0.8 kg more than the control area.
