Panel calls for overhaul of AIDS research

Article Abstract:

The $1.4 billion program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of AIDS Research is being poorly coordinated and needs reorganisation, according to a report by the AIDS Research Program Advisory Group, a panel of scientists and experts. Doubling of funds for AIDS research by non-NIH scientists has been recommended. The need for more attention in the basic research, specially in immunology, prevention and opportunistic infection is stressed. The strategic control over vaccine research also needs to be taken away from the NIH scientists. AIDS activists expressed a mixed reaction to the report.

NIH strives to keep resource sharing alive

Article Abstract:

The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) want universities to take reasonable measures to ensuring the free sharing of research tools between scientists. It has issued guidelines that call for universities to speed up the transfer of tools to other academic scientists and to private companies, and it is urging them to avoid patenting research tools. The guidelines have been welcomed by university technology-transfer officials, but other university officials fear loss of control.
