Panel offers compromise on food labelling

Article Abstract:

The ethics advisory group of the European Commission has proposed the labelling of food to exhibit the date of food modification by genetic engineering techniques, only when the changes are considerable. There are chances of stigmatizing food products and biotechnology when the biotechnology foods are labelled. Consumers are mostly interested in having a knowledge of the food value and date of manufacture. Some companies are willing to accept the proposition because they believe that the customers have a right to know about biotechnology in food production and the companies are proud of their contributions.

Europe agrees a compromise on food labels

Article Abstract:

A committee of European Parliament and the Council of Ministries from 15 states, has proposed labelling of genetically modified foods and ingredients. Labelling is necessary for those products which are scientifically different from the traditional product. Environmental groups criticize the agreement for its failure to implement the labelling of foods and ingredients from traditional products, and to label genetically modified and non-modified products mixtures. Some observers believe that the World Trade Organization may regard the proposed labelling requirements as a barrier to trade.

Long-term effect of GM crops serves up food for thought

Article Abstract:

Opponents of gene technology believe that it is wrong for the leading regulatory and scientific agencies to state that, in principle, genetically modified (GM) crops do not represent a significant threat to human health. Indeed, even some strong supporters of GM foods now feel that there should be more research into the potential health dangers and that monitoring systems permitting the early identification of any long-term difficulties should be established. It is becoming increasingly clear that consumer concerns about health cannot merely be overlooked if biotechnology is to flourish.
