Partners fall out over supercomputer bid

Article Abstract:

General Atomics (GA) and the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) have broken their partnership that managed the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The split occurred due to competition for a new grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to link supercomputers. For meeting the NSF's goals, UCSD seeks to develop a broad network of partners, capitalizing on the use of supercomputers, which reduces GA's role to a computer operator with limited powers. Both have submitted competing proposals for the next round of NSF funding in October 1997.
