Physics grapples with its image problem

Article Abstract:

There has been a marked decline in interest in physics among young people in the UK. Fewer young people are studying physics at A-level, and applications for undergraduate physics courses have dropped. A similar trend is being seen in the US, although interest in physics among young Americans seems to decline at a slightly later age. It is clear that physics courses must now pay much more attention to students' realistic job prospects. Students must also be made aware of the many job options open to them if they study physics.

Increase in protein analysis pushes demand for synchrotron operators

Article Abstract:

Synchrotrons are machines that produce radiation across a broad range of wavelengths, and this lets the user establish the behaviour and atomic structure and many different materials. With the resulting interest in protein analysis, more facilities are being built, and therefore synchrotron operators are in great demand.
