Phytoplankton death in the sea

Article Abstract:

Marine phytoplankton may just die and lyse, without being touched by a grazer, according to a new study by Agusti and colleagues. They estimated lysis rates of natural phytoplankton assemblages, using a method first proposed by van Boekel and colleagues. They found extremely high rates of lysis in surface waters in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, equivalent to 50% of phytoplankton growth, clearly showing that cell lysis can be substantial particularly if grazing and sinking rates are low.

Interrelated influence of iron, light and cell size on marine phytoplankton growth

Article Abstract:

Marine research shows that net algal production depends upon cellular iron, light and cell surface area. Photosynthetic iron-based redox proteins uptake depends directly on light intensity. Phytoplankton growth is less in ocean regions which are lacking in iron-based redox proteins like the euphotic zone of the Antarctic Ocean. Growth patterns in organisms including the coastal diatoms Thalassiosira pseudonana and Thalassiosira weissflogii are established.
