Plan to pool bird-flu data takes off

Article Abstract:

Seventy avian-flu scientists from several countries have signed up to be part of the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID), which aims to facilitate the sharing of avian flu outbreak data among countries. The genetic information and clinical and epidemiological data about avian flu strains would be grouped by GISAID using the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration, accessible to GISAID researchers initially and to the public later.

The dark side of E. coli

Article Abstract:

A food-poisoning outbreak traced to the Taco Bell restaurants, which affected at least 70 people across five states, was due to the culprit Escherichia coli O157:H7. The outbreaks have pointed on a bacterium that is difficult to detect and virtually impossible to treat or eradicate and it is revealed that strains of O157 could make a potent toxin and latch onto intestinal cells giving it the ability to cause kidney failure and even death.

Health effects of egg donation may take decades to emerge

Article Abstract:

The long-term risks of fertility drugs and the impact of those drugs on the health of women donating eggs for research purpose are discussed. The California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) in San Francisco and Britain's Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) are tackling the health risks and the issues of exposing healthy women to the potential risks of ovulation stimulation without the end result of a baby.
