Population dynamics of a recolonizing wolf population

Article Abstract:

The recolonization by wolves of northwestern Montana and southeastern British Columbia is described. The aim of the study was to document reproduction, survival, immigration and dispersal. It found that in high density populations the sex ration of offspring favoured males, but females were favoured in lower density populations. Pup production was relatively high, and pack size and surviving litter size were positively correlated. Survival was mostly higher within their territories, with lower survival rates of dispersing wolves.

Calf harvest and reproductive rate of reindeer in Finland

Article Abstract:

There is an increase in the reproductive rates of reindeer and Rangifer tarandus tarandus in Finland, despite a decrease in habitat resulting from a two-fold increase in density. Even places where the population density of the reindeer is high, harvesting of reindeer calves frees them from density-dependent decrease of reproductive rate. This occurs in herds where there is no supplemental feeding.

Impact of spatial and temporal variation in calf survival on the growth of elk populations

Article Abstract:

The estimation of spatial and temporal variations in survival of calf influences the growth of elk population and hence is a significant parameter in the management of elk population size.
