Predators increase the risk of catastrophic extinction of prey populations

Article Abstract:

Research describing the probability of prey extinction by predators is presented. In particular predation after a catastrophic event such as a hurricane is investigated.

Predator-induced behavior shifts and natural selection in field-experimental lizard populations

Article Abstract:

A controlled and replicated experimental study of selection in entirely natural population is conducted to demonstrate that lizards alter their habitat use in the presence of an introduced predator. It is concluded that these behavioral shifts do not prevent patterns of natural selection from changing in experimental populations.

Devastation of prey diversity by experimentally introduced predators in the field

Article Abstract:

Introduction of predator lizards on small islands initially lacking lizards significantly decreases both web spider abundance and species diversity. Spider population become similar to that on islands naturally containing lizards. A seven-year experiment on a natural system shows changes in the spider population within two years. Most of the rare spider species became permanently extinct while common spider species decreased but did not become extinct. The number of extinct species after lizard introduction was 12.6 times more than that on islands lacking lizards.
