Priorities in astronomy

Article Abstract:

The 2001 decadal review that lists which instruments should be built over the next decade, along with estimates of their cost, has come under increasing strain and forced the delay or 'indefinite postponement' of most of the projects. Astronomers trying to restore some simplicity to the review are compelled to revisit their widely admired system for ranking large projects that would go some way towards ensuring its continued relevance in astronomy's post-inflammatory epoch.

Report fuels criticism of UK research council

The UK's Medical Research Council is the subject of a parliamentary committee report criticizing it for poor communication and lack of funding priorities. The agency has responded by saying the report is overly critical and not constructive enough.
