Progressive field-state collapse and quantum non-demolition photon counting

Article Abstract:

The step-by-step collapse by non-destructively measuring the photon number of a field stored in a cavity is reported. The atoms behaving as microscopic clocks cross the cavity successively and the suppression of the photon number spread is demonstrated by correlations between repeated measurements.

Quantum jumps of light recording the birth and death of a photon in a cavity

Article Abstract:

An experiment is described that is used to observe the quantum jumps in the photon number. The application of a quantum non-demolition (QND) procedure to mesoscopic fields with tens of photons might open new perspectives for exploring the quantum-to-classical boundary.

Atomic recorder for light quanta

Article Abstract:

The study demonstrates a quantum memory, in which the state of a faint laser pulse is faithfully copied onto an ensemble of atoms. Quantum systems can be in a superposition of states, allowing quantum bits to take two logical values at once.
