Arrangement of RNA and proteins in the spiceossomal U1 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particle

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the development of techniques which enable a structural model of the three-dimensional protein and RNA arrangements in U1 snRNP to be derived in eukaryotic cells.

RNA-binding protein Nrd1 directs poly(A)-independent 3'-end formation of RNA polymerase II transcripts

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the prevention of read-through transcription from small nuclear RNA genes and yeast small nucleolar RNA into adjacent genes through the action of a cis-acting element.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae telomerase is an Sm small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particle

Article Abstract:

The lifespan of normal human cells can be greatly extended by activation of the chromosome end-replicating enzyme telomerase, associated with human cancers. An examination of eukaryotes in yeast shows that telomerase has an RNA subunit but little is known about its components. A new study shows that Saccharomyces cerevisiae telomerase RNA has a binding site for the Sm proteins and a 5'-2,2,7-trimethylguanosine cap, both an indication of small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particles involved in nuclear messenger RNA splicing. The study support a model in which RNA polymerase II and 7-methylguanosine-capped transcribe telomerase RNA.
