Rational design of aromatic polyketide natural products by recombinant assembly of enzymatic subunits

Article Abstract:

Bacterial aromatic polyketides can be synthesized through a rational design of polyketide synthase enzymes (PKSs) and manipulation of the chain synthesis, reduction of the keto groups and cyclization by genetic engineering. Construction of the rational design is performed on the Streptomyces strains which prepare two new polyketides using the combinations of various enzymatic subunits of aromatic and macrolide PKSs.

Reversible nonpolar-to-polar solvent

Article Abstract:

A system in which a non-ionic liquid converts to an ionic liquid upon exposure to an atmosphere of carbon dioxide and then reverts back to its non-ionic form when exposed to nitrogen or argon gas is created. Such switchable solvents should facilitate organic syntheses and separations by eliminating the need to remove and replace solvents after each reaction step.

Just add chlorine

Article Abstract:

A group of researchers led by Christopher Walsh has identified how chlorine is attached enzymatically to an intermediate during the formation of a natural product. Further, they have discovered that halogenation of an unreactive carbon center can be catalyzed by a halogenase enzyme called CmaB, that is alpha-ketoglutarate dependent and contains non-haem iron.
