Two modes of fusion pore opening revealed by cell-attached recordings at a synapse

Article Abstract:

Fusion of a vesicle with the cell membrane opens pore that releases transmitter to the extracelluar space and by recording fusion pore kinetics during single vesicle fusion, both full collapse and kiss and run fusion at calyx type synapses were found. For full collapse the initial fusion pore conductance increased rapidly allowing generation of fast synaptic currents while kiss-and-run fusion was seen as a brief capacitance flicker which means slower and smaller synaptic currents.

The inward rectification mechanism of the HERG cardiac potassium channel

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the inward rectification in HERG cardiac potassium channels expressed in mammalian cells. The inward rectification was found to be caused by a rapid voltage-dependent inactivation process that decreases conductance at positive voltages. The observed gating mechanism indicates the influence of the HERG channel in the normal physiological suppression of arrhythmias, particularly in suppressing premature afterbeats.

Intracellular gate opening in shaker K+ channels defined by high-affinity metal bridges

Article Abstract:

The two types of intersubunit metal bridge, involving cysteines placed near the bundle crossing, can occur simultaneously in the open state. These bridges provide constraints on the open shaker channel structure, and on the degree of movement upon opening.
