Research centres face chaos after German ruling on tax

Article Abstract:

A new tax ruling in Germany may cause havoc among the state-funded research institutes because the ruling could require these research institutes to reduce public funds intake and to register themselves as private companies. A German tax court ruled that the German national air and space research center was to pay value added tax on industrial contracts at the same rate applicable to commercial companies. If the ruling is held to other government funded research institutes, then under European Community rules, they may take no more than 25% of funds from the government.

.... As leak fuels German uranium debate

Article Abstract:

The German government is reportedly rethinking its position on the planned construction of a new neutron source by the Technical University in Munich. According to a memorandum sent by the federal environment ministry to the federal research ministry, which was leaked to the public, the environment ministry is thinking about redesigning the neutron source so that it will burn uranium that is only 70% enriched, instead of the controversial, weapons-grade highly enriched uranium that is 93% enriched.

German poll could change research goals

Article Abstract:

Germany's parliament has approved a 3.4% rise in the 1999 education and research budget. However polls suggest that the current Christian Democrat/Free Democrat coalition government may not be in power after the elections on 27 September. A 'grand coalition' of Christian Democrats (CDU) and Social Democrats (SPD) would mean little change for scientists, although one different would be the SPD plans to double the budget for science and education over the next five years.
