Rhino conservation tactics

Article Abstract:

Protecting Africa's black and white rhinos from poaching by cutting off their horns may not be effective. An analysis of Namibia's dehorning policy found that the valuable horns grow back too quickly to make the tactic an effective economic deterrent. Poachers are often willing to kill rhinos even when their horns are small. Data on rhino populations in Namibia are too inconclusive to declare dehorning a success or a failure. Local support is the crucial factor in saving the rhinos from extinction in the wild.

'Marketing' species conservation

Article Abstract:

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species cannot function effectively unless direct financing is used as a cost-effective approach to conservation. The case of mahogany is presented as an example of a public-private conservation initiative.
