Satin bowerbird displays are not extremely costly

Article Abstract:

Satin bowerbird displays are not as expensive as general assumptions. The hypothesis involving the costliness of displays predicts high male mortality levels. The lack of evidence for high male mortality, very costly display and an inverse relationship between display size and male mortality contradicts this hypothesis. Alternative explanations such as traits acquired with experience can also build honest advertising without high cost.
