Scandal of crystal design...

Article Abstract:

The delegates at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Self-Assembly in Synthetic Chemistry, held in Quebec from May 16-21, 1996, discussed methods to prepare crystals of specific structures. Organic building blocks can be designed so that they self-assemble in a specific manner. Covalent groups at the tips of the building blocks increase the stability of the organic crystals. Open-framework structures are prepared using organic molecules joined at their vertices through metal ions. Bonds such as hydrogen bonds that are weaker than covalent bonds assist self-assembly.

Towards the synthetic dragonfly

Article Abstract:

The task of synthesizing a dragon fly has become a realistic goal due to amazing advance in the understanding of complex molecular structure. Forced evolution of polynucleotide has been achieved which will be key to understanding RNA and DNA. Already scientists such as Albert Eschenmoser and Nadrian Seeman have revealed the uniqueness of RNA and DNA using synthetic nucleic-acid analogues.
