Science champion perplexes allies with news of departure

Article Abstract:

Robert Walker surprised members of both parties by announcing his retirement. At 52, he is in fine health, a voter favorite in his Pennsylvania district, and has proven himself a capable leader of science policy. He fought hard to protect basic science while his own Republican party was pushing for drastic budget cuts. Walker denied the possibility that the Science Committee would be abolished after his departure. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin, the Republican Space Committee chairman, is the likely replacement for Walker as Science chair.
