Selective binding and removal of guests in a microporous metal-organic framework

Article Abstract:

Microporous structures based on organic building blocks can be designed to selectively bind aromatic guest molecules. The rigidity of the materials permit size and shape selection and inclusion of organic molecules and ions. A symmetric organic molecule that can bind metal ions is used as the starting material. The material, which is stable up to 350 degrees celsius, has layers of metal-organic compounds that alternate with layers of compounds whose composition is based on the starting material. The layers form a channel that can bind the aromatic guest molecule.

In support of the pore

Article Abstract:

The preparation of an organic analog to zeolites has opened up possibilities for the production of stronger organic porous materials. Zeolites are inorganic minerals that release water on heating but retain their crystalline structure and form a porous material that has wide applications. Porous materials with an organic base can be prepared with solids that have a small number of bonds between the constituent atoms. It is possible to manipulate the pore size and functionality of the materials.

Ordered macroporous materials by emulsion templating

Article Abstract:

A new method to produce highly monodisperse macroporous materials has been developed. Macroporous materials of titania, silica and zirconia were formed using emulsion droplets as templates via a sol-gel process. The spherical pores left behind by the emulsion droplets were found to be highly ordered. This demonstrates that the accurate control of pore size is possible.
