Silica aerogel films prepared at ambient pressure by using surface derivatization to induce reversible drying shrinkage

Article Abstract:

Aerogels, highly porous solids, can be prepared by a simple dip-coating method at ambient pressure without exhibiting the requirement for supercritical extraction. In this method, the addition of surface groups to the inorganic gel makes drying shrinkage reversible. This is because the gel assumes a porous state with the withdrawal of the solvent. By this approach, aerogels with 98.5% porosity can be produced. It can enhance the commercial applications of these materials in contrast to aerogels prepared by supercritical extraction which is a costly and unsafe method.

Continuous self-assembly of organic-inorganic nanocomposite coatings that mimic nacre

Article Abstract:

Biomineralization forms natural nanocomposites, the most studied of which is the nacre of abalone shell. Its structure provides strength, hardness and toughness, but the goal to efficiently process layered organic-inorganic composites remains elusive. A rapid and efficient method to prepare nanolaminated coatings mimicking the structure of nacre, is reported. Evaporation during dip-coating induces the formation of micelles and partitioning of organic components into the micellar interiors. The structure is fixed by polymerization.

Self-assembly of mesoscopically ordered chromatic polydiacetylene/silica nanocomposites

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the self-assembly of cubic, hexagonal or lamellar mesoscopic orders within conjugated polymer/silica nanocomposite films. The rapid self-assembly procedure is discussed.
