Sites of alcohol and volatile anaesthetic action on GABA and glycine receptors

Article Abstract:

It has been widely believed that volatile anaesthetics act non-specifically on the central nervous system. However, recent studies show that receptors for inhibitory neurotransmitters, such as glycine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA,) are the most sensitive to volatile alcohols and anaesthetics. A new study, using a chimaeric receptor, supports the theory that general anaesthetics act specifically and not non-specifically as previously thought.

LTRPC7 is a Mg.ATP-regulated divalent cation channel required for cell viability

Article Abstract:

Research examining molecular mechanisms regulating divalent cations entry into mammalian cells is presented. Particular attention is given to functional descriptions and cloning of Ca2+ and Mg2+-permeable divalent cation channel.
