Some ethical issues raised by studies of predation and aggression

Article Abstract:

Research on predator-prey interactions and fighting among conspecifics may be theoretically important but such relevance is lost and ethical problems arise if they are staged and too manipulated. Researchers must be able to gain the most information with minimal animal suffering. This can be done by consulting other researchers and non-researchers on the importance of the research, detail recording of the experiments, doing collaborative research rather than independent ones, collecting data from minimized natural encounters, using models rather than live predators and using the minimum sample size.

Toad tadpole aggregation behaviour: evidence for a predator avoidance function

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the aggregation behavior of Bufo bufo tadpoles, with particular emphasis on predator avoidance. Tadpole groups were found to be more cohesive in the presence of other individuals from one sibship and fish chemical cues. In the presence of fish predators, individual tadpoles were found to have higher strike rates than those in larger groups. Aggregation behavior was examined in terms of the cooperative group and selfish herd theories.

Theory and method in studies of vigilance and aggregation

Article Abstract:

A review is presented into the relationship between vigilance and aggregation in prey, focusing on the theory that individual vigilance falls as the size of the prey group increases.
