Sticky end in protein synthesis

Article Abstract:

A mutation in the gene coding for alanyl-rRNA synthetase (AlaRS), a component of the gene-expression machinery by which aminoacyl-transfer RNAs translate messenger RNA into an amino-acid sequence on the ribosome is identified. Closer inspection revealed that this mutation increases the frequency of errors during translation, leading to the gradual accumulation of inaccurately synthesized proteins that eventually form aggregates.

Verification of the crooks fluctuation theorem and recovery of RNA folding free energies

Article Abstract:

A study shows the use of Crook fluctuation theorem to determine folding free energies for folding and unfolding processes occurring in weak as well as strong nonequilibrium regimes, thereby providing a test of its validity. The result determines the difference in folding free energy between an RNA molecule and a mutant differing only by one base pair and the thermodynamic stabilizing effect on the RNA structure.

Rare returns on lost effort

Article Abstract:

The backbone of macroscopic thermodynamics follows the concept of irreversibility. The mechanical unfolding and refolding of individual RNA molecules, applying and measuring forces using optical tweezers which acts as an ultra-sensitive spring to trap and hold small particles is observed.
